Interactive Salon

The Interactive Salon is an international traveling exhibition that showcases research prototypes, technology products and occasions collaborative and formative activities with broad stakeholder participation.

Run in 2006–2007, the touring exhibition promoted innovative technologies and concepts for communication with visitors in different museum environments. The project was the result of a collaboration between the Digital Heritage Center Sweden AB/Interactive Institute Swedish ICT AB, Stockholm City Museum and European Network of Excellence in Open Cultural Heritage (EPOCH) and received support from Culture of the Future, The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and EPOCH.

Various projects from European research institutes, universities, the creative industry and museums were invited to demonstrate how new technology and concepts can enhance the visitor experience, interpretation and communication in museums and similar environments. These projects offered examples of the main types of digital media technologies that have been applied to museum environments. They demonstrated the broad spectrum of partnerships involved, including government authorities, SMEs, IT companies, foundations, museum content providers, heritage sites, media producers and research institutes. The initiative was the first of its kind in Sweden and it created a forum for discussion about technologies that promote and preserve cultural heritage.

The Interactive Salon also includes collaborative and formative activities (meetings, evaluations, scenario labs, seminars and workshops) that are organized throughout the event with the purpose of supporting cultural heritage institutions in their dialogue with other stakeholders, promoting a greater sharing of expertise, and disseminating case studies of successful applications of digital technologies for cultural heritage. Furthermore, the exhibition presents a great opportunity for the public to take part in ongoing research projects.
