The Museum Laboratory started in 2005 as a collaboration between Visions for Museums and three museums in order to promote the use of digital media in local history museums in the Swedish-speaking parts of Finland.
Three Finland-Swedish home district museums, Bjärgas, Kilen och Pargas took part in the Museum Laboratory and collaborated on a common digital database of the local historic archives. The database was accessible through an online wiki-application, where students from the local schools and other visitors were able to consult the database and add content, to make it grow. Any kind of file could be added – text, image, sound, film, etc.
In order to limit the amount of material to digitise and present to the visitors, this was done on certain occassions, in the form of a web-based exhibition. The pilot project dealt with the time of the 2nd world war.
